“Life is too short to knit with bad yarn!”
I can’t think of a better way to start the new year than with the arrival of several batches of homegrown yarns and roving from our herd. We sent our grade 1 white fleeces to a local mill several months ago, and yesterday I picked up the finished yarn. It’s fabulous! The mill that we use has a dehairing machine, something that I feel is absolutely necessary for producing the best quality yarn. Although we clean and skirt our fleeces well before sending them out for processing, it’s impossible to catch everything. This machine removes almost all of the unwanted strong primaries (although our grade 1 fleeces have minimal strong primaries) and the tiny pieces of VM that can’t be removed by hand. The results are a gorgeous yarn!
We also sent some of our grade 2 white and colored fleeces to another local mill. This mill made us rug yarn in various shades, as well as awesome roving. The roving was dyed different colors, and some was blended sari silk or bamboo.
All of these products from our herd will be available in our farm store when it opens this spring. We will also be featuring a selection in our online store soon. If you are interested in purchasing yarn or roving in the meantime, please give us a call.
